Source of the early internet meme All Your Base I never thought Zero Wing was particularly odd in its opening animation when I used to play this in the early days of emulation when I was in my early teens.
In fact, the hype and laughs around the All Your Base phenomenon distracts from the fact that Zero Wing is a solid shooter with an excellent FM soundtrack, whether you are playing the arcade version or the mega drive version. Driving leads, pumping basslines and explosions abound, this is the sort of game that doesn't get made any more and while it's too easily written off as a kind of hybrid between Parodius and R-Type, the multiple power ups and fast paced shooting makes this an enjoyable if short shoot 'em up.
